Armstrong's Saddlery, c.1868

Philip Armstrong built a cottage and established a saddlery and harness-making business on this site in 1868.
The pit sawn totara south wall has morticed studs nailed to the bottom plate and dates from this time. Walter, Philip's brother, took over the house and business in 1872 adding a rimu front and kitchen lean-to in the 1880s.
Later the shop was converted into a bedroom and the house divided into two flats. Members of the Armstrong family lived in the house until 1981 when Derek and Margaret Milne and family renovated and extended the villa.
Pam and Peter Francks, only the third family to live here in 150 years, bought in 1999 and have continued to restore and maintain the house in keeping with Greytown's Victorian heritage.
